17 Jan Six Olympians on the startline for the Design Windows Twilight Challenge
The Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka team are excited to announce six Olympians will be racing alongside their High Performance teammates at the Design Windows Twilight Challenge in Wānaka township on Friday 18th February at the Wanaka Showcase. Olympic Bronze medallist Hayden Wilde and his fellow Tokyo teammates Nicole van der Kaay, Ainsley Thorpe, Tayler Reid have confirmed their attendance, as has Simone Ackermann, who raced for South Africa in Tokyo and Beijing, London and Rio Olympian Andrea Hewitt, will be joining them.
The Design Windows Twilight race is the final race of the Triathlon NZ Suzuki NZ Elite series, which will see Aotearoa’s finest elite triathletes fight it out for the overall win, prizes and the glory of claiming this pinnacle series, as they head into the Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022 selection period.
Athletes from the High Performance team and the National and Development squads from across New Zealand will be racing, and crowds will see 25 males and 15 females racing around Lake Wānaka township, bringing a real buzz of triathlon back into the community.
Plus, Hayden Wilde will also be recreating the Doddsy Challenge, charity race concept on the Friday Night, where he challenges his elite and Under 19 friends to beat him and win $4000 purse, but if he wins, everything will go to a charity close to his heart. The Rotorua MTB Club First Response unit which does amazing work up in the Rotorua Whakarewarewa Forest. Hayden will give his Under 19 competitors a head start, so it will be incredibly exciting to watch him and the HP team chase them down. We can’t wait to see this charity race play out in Wānaka.
“We are very excited to bring racing back into the centre of town on a Friday night and the Doddsy Challenge concept with Hayden Wilde. We expect to see crowds come along to watch, cheer and spend some time down in our local bars and restaurants along the race course,” says Tony Dodds, Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka Showcase Manager. “The elite athletes will have a 750m swim, 15km bike course through town and a 5km run along the lakefront to the finish along infront of the local businesses. The racing will start at 5:30 with the women’s race and 7pm for the men. We hope you can bring the family down to watch the best in kiwi triathlon.”
Before the Design Windows Twilight Challenge will be the Puzzling World Mini Race organised by Sport Otago. This event is for those 5 years and under to come and have an awesome time, slipping down our special slip and slide by the skate park on Pembroke Park, weaving through our obstacle course and zooming along the closed road on a bike or scooter to the finish line; all set up as if they were doing the Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka Half.
