27 Jul Challenge Wanaka joins Anna Johnson in training for the full distance race
We meet Anna Johnson, a working mum who has entered the full distance Challenge Wanaka. We will be following Anna through her training in the lead up to the 2018 race.
Living in Methven, New Zealand Anna is a busy mum to two amazing kids as well as working 30 hours a week managing a Gym in a multipurpose facility in Ashburton. Here she loves being involved in other people’s goals, especially enjoying teaching classes and working alongside some amazingly passionate instructors.
Having previously completed the Challenge Wanaka Half and Coast to Coast, Anna is not totally new to the sport and competition but the full distance will be a new challenge.
“I do LOVE Challenge Wanaka so there was no other option but to give the full a go! Over the last few years I have found myself using the excuse of being too busy working and being a mum that I couldn’t find time to train for a race but at the start of this year I made the decision that these excuses needed to stop” says Anna.
Fitting training in around her busy schedule, Anna will have support from Richard Greer at Team CP and a training partner in her friend Amy who is doing the Half distance race.
Both Anna and Amy have dedicated their training and race to Amy’s niece Ruby. At 14 days old a tumour was found in Ruby’s spine, which is pressing on her spinal cord and preventing her legs from working. Over the next 8 months Ruby will need treatment and her family, mum Nicole, dad Steven and two-year-old brother Mason, will be living in the Ronald McDonald House. Anna and Amy wanted to do something to help and are using their adventures in training for Challenge Wanaka to raise money for Ronald McDonald House. “I can hurt and I like to race but I am not fast; I try hard and am committed once I make a decision to do something.”
