Cycle Surgery Bike Leg

The 180km bike is over one lap and takes in three of the lakes in the Southern Lakes region.

The course heads out of town towards Luggate and drops steadily along side the Clutha River towards Lake Dunstan. Taking a left hand turn at Cromwell competitors then travel north along the opposite side of Lake Dunstan, across the Lindis River bridge and make a left hand turn just before Tarras. This is near half way on the bike course.

A further 20km along the Luggate-Tarras Rd the course makes a right hand turn onto Kane Rd and heads towards Lake Hawea. Special needs bags are available at the 100km mark. Once at Lake Hawea, the course turns left back towards Wanaka and at 140km competitors will start winding round the edge of Lake Wanaka township as they head out towards Treble Cone before completing the final 40km.

Compulsory Gear

It is compulsory to have a special needs bag for the Bike Leg that contains a long sleeve thermal top, plus whatever else you may wish to include in there like gels, Vaseline, candy bars, Jelly Babies, salt tablets etc.

Because we are in an alpine environment, the weather may change overnight and conditions on race day could be colder than you expect. As we have said previously, in all likelihood it will be a beautiful hot day, but we want to be prepared for all conditions.

Aid Stations

Aid stations on the bike will be approximately 20km apart. These will have bike bottles with Balance electrolyte drink or water in them. Balance energy gels, Nutra-Life energy bars and bananas will also be available from aid stations at all times.

Drafting

If you are caught drafting you will be penalised and/or disqualified as per the Triathlon NZ regulations. Please read the 'Terms & Conditions' which are part of the entry form for clarification on our drafting rules.

Transition 2 (T2)

Transition 2 is the same as Transition 1. Once you come to the end of the bike, you must dismount before you enter T2 and hand your helmet and bike to a marshal who will rack it for you.

You must once again collect your T2 bag (bike to run) and proceed back to same men's or women's change tents to prepare for the run. Once again, put all of your cycling gear in your T2 bag and leave it in the tent where a marshal will collect it and make it available at the 'Gear Collection Area' after the race.

You then exit T2 along Ardmore Street towards the Lake Wanaka outlet to begin the run.
